Help me give my students a comfortable carpet on which to listen, read, and respond to literature with peers using sentence frames and vocabulary word cards displayed on an interactive whiteboard easel.
I am fortunate to work with a diverse group of English language learner students in a city school district setting. Elementary-aged English language learners are eager to learn and bring their diverse learning backgrounds to my classroom. Students and their families represent many countries from around the world which creates a wonderful learning culture.
Creating a comfortable, welcoming environment for ELL's helps to reduce the students' affective filter and allows for free thinking and sharing of ideas.
My classroom is used to instruct ELL's of similar language proficiencies to develop their language acquisition skills, such as vocabulary development, grammar, sentence structure, and comprehension of the English language, to name a few.
My Project
The materials I have requested for my project will create a space for students that is warm, inviting, and comfortable. During an interactive read-aloud lesson, students will gather on the carpet to listen to a story. During the read-aloud, students will turn and talk to one another during different points of the story using the posted vocabulary cards (that correspond with story vocabulary), as well as sentence strips that contain cloze sentences to help students form complete thoughts in response to literature.
The interactive dry erase boards will allow for pairs of students to brainstorm ideas and promote free thinking and responses to literature.
All of the materials requested will support literacy development for ELL's in all language domains: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
