Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Dual Language school and work with 35-40 students each year. My students speak both English and Spanish, and they come from homes where either English or Spanish are spoken. They are excited to learn, and school is a safe place for them. All of my students are language learners (either learning English or Spanish), and they share their linguistic and cultural gifts with each other in the classroom.
My students are eager to learn and often surprise me with their creativity and perseverance.
They have faced many obstacles in their daily lives and show their resilience every day. In the classroom, I provide my students with relevant material, differentiated tasks, and culturally-sensitive literature to engage them in their learning. I love to see their excitement when they discover something new!
My Project
My students are always searching for high-interest books. They love to read funny stories with which they can relate, like Big Nate (Nate el Grande). All of my students are learning both English and Spanish in our Dual Language Program. It is often difficult to find their favorite books in Spanish at a reasonable price. They love Mo Willems' books and if I could, I would stock my classroom library with Mo Willems books for each students. This Donors Choose project will help me achieve that goal.
High-quality, interesting, and engaging resources are essential to the literacy development of my bilingual students.
With these new books and letter tiles to develop word fluency, my students will be one step closer to becoming biliterate individuals.
