Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title I charter in San Francisco. Mostly made up of English Language Learners, our room is constantly working on the acquisition of new vocabulary and better understanding of multiple languages through literature. My room is full of hilarious, genuine, and vocal first grade minds who exhibit a natural curiosity for the ever-evolving world around them. A typical day looks chaotic and sounds rowdy. We are an active bunch that loves to learn through discussion, movement, and projects. All in all, there is simply nothing typical about this inquisitive bunch.

My Project

I want to best serve all my students. I am interested in taking an online course which would focus on strategies for implementing literature into the classroom with English language learners. The curriculum provides a rationale for the use of literature in the classroom with language learners and principles for selecting appropriate reading materials and activities. It suggests criteria for selecting and evaluating materials for classroom use and identifies some of the distinctive features of novels, short stories, poems and plays so that these can be explored in the classroom.

This course would allow me to develop practical materials and strategies for cognitively and effectively engaging learners through the integration of a variety of pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading techniques.

The course provides activities for scaffolding literature instruction and for developing critical reading and discussion.
