My Students

I know everyone thinks this about their class; but I really do have the best Pre-k class in the whole world! They come from a variety of situations and face numerous hardships but we work incredibly hard to let them know we believe in them and they can do anything.

I teach at a Title I school in South Carolina where 95 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Due to the community's poverty level, we are not allowed to ask for any school supplies from our families - and instead seek donors and grant programs to help fund the materials we need for the school year.

Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day. They dream big, and as long as they hold onto their dreams, I have no doubt they can and will achieve them. I am honored to play some small part in helping them.

My Project

These books are being requested to begin a new home literacy program. Each child in my Pre-K class will be given a colorful 5 shelf bookcase at a kickoff event. Parents and families will also attend and receive details of the program.

Every month a Teacher and assistant will visit each child's home and bring them a new book to add to their bookshelf; as well as engage families in a literacy skill lesson.

Teachers will plan to spend about 20 minutes per home, and read the story with students and their families. By the end of the school year, each family will have 10 new books, and 10 home reading sessions with their Teacher.

During the home visit, teachers will also model and teach parents how to read to their little ones. Every month will have a different concepts-of-print skill that is being highlighted, including tracking print left-to-right, identifying the role of author and illustrator, using pictures as context clues, and many more!

The opportunity for students to grow their home library is amazing. The ability to grow Parent-School relationships by bringing the classroom to the home will also be fantastic. It is also anticipated that the early exposure to these crucial literacy concepts will build and enhance student performance throughout their elementary careers.

Our primary goal is to purchase enough books and shelves to begin the program with one full class this year. Eventually we would love to grow the program to serve all of the Pre-K and Kindergarten students at our school. Thank-you so much for your support in getting our program started with high quality books for our lessons.
