My Students

My school is an innovative, non-traditional high school that supports a diverse population. We are a small learning community with about 250 students. Students from all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds mingle in an environment that seeks to foster new experiences. Many of my students will be the first in their families to experience college.

In my class and clubs the students learn to connect with their world through projects and experiences outside the classroom.

Through my seminar classes the students must complete community service and college skill work lessons. The clubs I sponsor include the Outdoor Adventures and Gay Straight Alliance. Creating an inclusive atmosphere that fosters new friendships while presenting new challenges and experiences is something I believe is key to the whole student approach.

My Project

Literacy and Reading scores in my state are not moving in the correct direction. Part of this is due to the drop off in reading books that the students get to choose for themselves. I have given all the students at my school and survey asking for books they would like to read as part of class. The students will be grouped into reading clubs where they will meet once a week to discuss their books, much like any book clubs in society. This will get the students reading more, and with less pushing as they have chosen the books they will be reading.
