Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember curling up with a loved one and listening to your favorite book? Moments like this help promote literacy. "... the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children." - Report of the Commission on Reading.
The majority of my thirty 5th graders lack the opportunity to have their parents or guardians read to them on a daily basis.
Growing up in poverty has many disadvantages. Some parents aren't around, language is a barrier, and unfortunately not all parents take the time to invest in their child's education. Regardless of the circumstances these children wake up everyday and come to school. They are motivated to learn and strive to achieve their fullest potential.
My Project
Nothing is worse then listening to a teacher read aloud to you all day. Yes, my students hear me read selected stories to them on a regular basis and we practice the strategy for the day, but my students want to take learning into their own hands. During guided reading the students want to be able to pick a book to listen to and practice the strategies independently. They want to hear the book being read fluently and with expression. Some struggle with reading and this will help motivate them and improve their comprehension. My students need a listening center to improve fluency and comprehension with a set of books on CD.
A famous author once said " The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more you learn, the more places you'll go!" Help these students continue their adventure by giving them the tools they need to improve in reading.
