This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a National Board Certified Teacher who works at a Title I elementary school.
Many of my students come from military families and their experiences are often brought into the classroom.
More than 50 percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced-priced lunch. My classroom is one that is diverse in learning styles, cultures, and interests. It is the varied backgrounds of my students that evokes wonderful classroom discussions and allows my students to learn from their peers' perspectives respectfully.
My Project
As a literacy teacher attending the International Literacy Association will allow me to dive deep into best practices for reading and writing instruction. I will walk away with a wealth of information from educational practitioners in the field. I will learn strategies for vocabulary building, which is a current area of need with my students. I will understand the power of authentic assessment when making instructional support a diverse group of learners such as struggling, advanced, and English learners. This conference will allow me to gain knowledge to create a culture of literacy that I will share with my colleagues so that their students too can benefit.
The ability to read, write, and communicate connects people to one another.
I want to help students in my community to be literate and this conference will equip me with the tools I need.
