My students need tablets and headphones,Scholastic News magazines, and an easel in the classroom.

I have had the privilege of teaching my students for the past 5 years. My biggest challenge is actively engaging students in literacy. My goal by the end of the year is to build strong confident readers.
My students reside in an low income area.
Most of them come from single family homes. Some are being raised by someone other than a parent (grandparent, foster care, etc,). My students are warm and caring. They are hard workers and are beginning to value the opportunities being given to them. My school is struggling to maintain order while implementing quality instruction. There is limited technology available to staff and students. We have a staff of dedicated teachers that are working towards a common goal. The teachers truly put their students first.
Based on the principle of Universal Design, my goal is to provide multiple access points to literature with these tablets. Below level students will be able to listen to rich on level literature using the headphones and tablets. They will also be able to follow along visually. All students will also have access to non-fiction text from the Scholastic News magazines. Scholastic News is engaging and age appropriate. I personally think that students do not have enough access to non-fiction text. Students will also utilize the tablets to access informational text to explore their interest and complete research projects. The easel will be used to provide feedback and engaging lessons for all students. My overall goal is to actively engage students, increase their reading stamina, as well as increasing their exposure to various forms to literature.
The donations will aid in increasing student performance and developing on task behavior.
Additionally, the donations will assist in helping students meet their own personal goals and develop into confident, and critical thinking students. Increased gains in reading will lead to increased self-esteem, which in turn leads to increased opportunities.
