Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten at a wonderful school in a very poor neighborhood. Many of my students had never heard a book read aloud, or held a pencil before they entered kindergarten. Many start school speaking only Spanish or Vietnamese. But my heart is warmed by the fact that by the end of the year, all of the children have at least enough English to communicate and they have learned to love school. Our morning is dedicated to literacy lessons, which include Writers' Workshop, Guided Reading Groups and Literacy Centers. Literacy Centers are activities and games that reinforce skills such as identifying letters and sounds, making words, writing sentences, learning poems and chants, and responding to literature. The kindergartners learn best with hands-on activities. What I would love to have is some new materials to supplement the Literacy Center activities that I have made for my class. These materials would enable me to create several new centers for the students, and would be used over and over again in a variety of different activities. This gift would help every child in my class, every single day, to learn the literacy skills they need so much.
