I am a kindergarten teacher in Staten Island. Next September, I have been assigned to a kindergarten collaborative teaching class. This means I will have a class of students with both special education needs and general education children.
About 40% of our school population receives free or reduced lunch. Our school is a Title I school because of the percentage of lunches that are free or reduced. The school consists of an extremely diverse group of one thousand children in Grades K through 5. Their home resources are extremely limited and so are our schools resources. The growing number of new enrollments makes it hard for all the teacher requests for instructional materials to be met. That is why I am drafting this proposal. I would like to add instructional materials to my classrooom to enrich my students learning environment.
We teach and learn using the balanced literacy approach, and spend our entire morning working in whole group, small group, and one-to-one instruction. The small groups work in literacy centers while I work with a small group for a specific teaching purpose. In the afternoon, I use the same workshop model for Math.
I would love to have Lakeshore Learning's Language Instant Learning Centers, Set 1 and 2 and Lakeshore Learning's Math Centers. Each center addresses a particular skill and would benefit all of my students, especially my English language learners (I have 3 this year). Some of the skills that can be strengthened by these centers are:
*Identifying uppercase & lowercase letters
• Letter sounds
• Recognizing Consonant Vowel Consonant words
• Initial & final sounds
• Rhyming sounds
• Copying printed words
• Medial vowel sounds
• Word patterns
• Measuring
• Counting
• Estimating and much, much more.
I hope that you will consider funding these items and give my students a greater opportunity to build and reinforce the skills that are taught to them. Any consideration you may give to this proposal is most appreciated.
