This year I am a literacy coach at a Title I school in New York City. The school serves students from low-income homes, foster homes, and sometimes shelters. Regardless of their background, students come to school eager to learn and want to do their best. Unfortunately the reading proficiency at the school is far below standards and the school recieves less resources than many other city schools. I would like to provide resources such as classroom computers, tablets, literacy centers and activities to increase reading proficiency. I would also like to provide teachers access to materials that will engage students and support early literacy instruction.
My Project
As a literacy coach, I am trying to support my teachers by modeling best practices and improving literacy instruction for grades K-2. Literacy centers during small group instruction is one way teachers can target individual student needs in reading. These pocket charts will give teachers a place to display their center rotations, and we will use the laminator to create reusable centers and displays. The school is extremely underfunded, and students deserve the best no matter where they live. Help me give teachers the tools to help their students. Early childhood is the foundation for academic and school success. Every child deserves the best school experience. Thank you!
