My students need literacy centers that will help them with their letters/letter sounds and word building. These items will help them build a foundation for future academic success and overall achievement.
Most of our students come from low income families and live in project housing. Unfortunately, most do not have both parents living at home which puts a financial burden on the families.
Social scientist's have found that children growing up in single-parent families are disadvantaged in other ways when compared to a two-biological-parent families.
Many of these problems are directly related to the poor economic condition of single-parent families, not just to parenting style. These children are at risk and need extra support.
Early literacy skills are highly important for my students. Students are expected to leave Kindergarten reading! So our first goal is to get them to identify the letters in the alphabet, the sounds they make and how they can be combined to make words.
These items will be used in our phonics literacy stations and will help them improve their reading skills and efficiency.
*The letter manipulative's and puzzles will give children a way to interact with the alphabet through hands on play.
* The writing books will help the students practice letter recognition and the markers are needed for it as well.
* The alphabet chart will be a great tool for me to use. We can go over letters, sounds, phonemes, vocabulary and word formations.
