First grade is an incredible year in a child’s education. Students are shifting from being dependent learners to being active, independent learners. This is my first year teaching first grade after nine years in second grade. While this has been quite a change, I truly love teaching firsties. Their bright smiles and willingness to work make my job easy.
This year I have a classroom full of students that are so eager to learn and discover new things.
They come to school excited and ready to work. They really enjoy working together to explore new concepts and love problem solving. I expect to see lots of academic growth this year as well as significant social/emotional growth. I look forward to sharing this experience with them.
My Project
My students really enjoy working in cooperative learning centers with their peers. All of the items in this project will assist in creating new options for each of their literacy centers. The HP color printer and ink, cardstock, Scotch thermal laminator, laminating sheets, and the X-ACTO Laser Guillotine will all be used to print, laminate, and cut new center materials for my students. These new literacy center materials will be differentiated which will address the educational needs of each individual student while also providing more student choice during center rotations.
First grade students need engaging literacy centers to help foster independence and enhance classroom instruction.
During center time, students are able to complete a variety of tasks within a specified amount of time. They are also able to work together with their peers to solve problems which is crucial in social development.
I have seen how my students are actively engaged during center rotations, and I believe that new center materials will only further their desire to become independent learners and creative problem solvers.
