I work with a very diverse group of students. They come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. However, when they come together its not about race, gender, or finances. It's all about our mutual love of learning. We sing, we read, we dance, we count, we respect, we care, we share, we appreciate, we sometimes fall, but we always get back up and try it again. Many of my students families are barely hanging on, struggling to remain in the surrounding neighborhoods, so their children can remain in our school. School is their worry-free safe place. For some students our school is the one constant they have in their lives.
My Project
My students need ready to use literacy centers to build language skills. These centers allow students to work at their own pace to develop skills such as: rhyming, sight words, beginning sounds and building/reading cvc words.
My students are eager to learn and they need to feel a sense of confidence when practicing taught skills on their own or within a small group.
By having access to these ready-made centers it will give students the independence to choose a center and a skill to master.
Hands on practice is the best way to reinforce what we are learning in the classroom. Through multiple opportunities to practice foundational skills in different context, my students will excel and thrive in learning the English language.
