Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There's so much to be done in such a short amount of time. While the challenge can feel overwhelming, the accomplishments are amazing.
My ESL classroom is comprised of inner-city kids at a Title I school.
As fifth graders, their personalities are bulging at the seams (oh, how they make me laugh), but we have a lot of work ahead of us; this is a really important year for elementary students in Texas.
My Project
My students' ability levels are extremely varied, which makes for a very interesting class environment. The main purpose of purchasing these specific materials, at different levels, is to allow students to be independently engaged in purposeful instruction, while I conduct reading intervention lessons with a small group of students.
This particular bundle includes the "5-Minute Vocabulary Practice Cards" and a "Vocabulary Folder Game Library," both of which will help expand my ESL student's vocabulary.
A significant learning objective is teaching kids how to compare passages, so I'm also requesting the "Fiction & Nonfiction Paired Passages" kit.
Finally, students have to be able to read a short passage and answer inferencing questions, as well as, evidence-based question. The last kit I'm requesting is the "Read & Respond Using Evidence Card Bank."
As a new fifth grade teacher, I have very few resources at my disposal.
I've purchased some materials on my own, and the school provides some as well (one textbook per every two or three students). These materials should last me for years, which means they're useful not for just the 45 students I have this year, but the 100's to follow.
