This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Never Give Up!" is something you will hear my students chanting in the classroom throughout the year. I teach second grade reading in a Title One school, in Washington DC, where all of my students receive free lunch. The challenges my students face as seven year olds are surreal; however, they consistently rise to meet these challenges head on. At the beginning of the school year, we discuss how learning to read might not be easy, and there are going to be times we want to quit. No matter what, we need to make sure we "Never Give Up!"
My students beat the odds every single day.
Statistics says that the majority of my students won't be reading on grade level when they enter third grade and will continue to fall further and further behind. This is why I think it is so important that my students build a solid foundation in literacy. Despite these statistics, ninety percent of my students leave second grade reading at or above grade level. They are closing the achievement gap and showing everyone how important it is to "Never Give Up!"
My Project
My students love going to their literacy centers each day. To help keep them engaged, I try to create hands-on materials that are differentiated to meet each student at their academic level.
My students need to be able to quickly determine their center work and color coded activities help them do this with paper, dots, rings and laminating pouches.
My students love lots of literacy center choices. With these materials, I will be able to continue differentiating their work and provide them with hands-on activities.
This project will allow my students to continue to have many literacy center choices on their level that will help to keep them engaged and love reading.
