"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." ~Dr. Seuss
This quote is exactly why it is important to promote literacy and provide rich literacy activities for early elementary students like mine.
I am currently the teacher of 23 sensational second grade students, in a middle class town.
Our school houses grades K-2 and there are about 600 students altogether. We work hard all day to keep the students engaged and having fun, while meeting the rigors of the Common Core Curriculum. My students come from various backgrounds with very supportive parents. Our class is very diverse, and includes children for which English is not their first language. It also includes students who are performing above benchmark, as well as below and on grade level. My students love to learn and enjoy moving around the classroom to complete their centers each week!
My Project
The students love learning to read and enjoy the Literacy Centers in our classroom. Unfortunately, we do not have many books on CD to listen to at our listening center, giving the students limited time with that center each week. Acquiring more books with CDs, especially the non-fiction sets, will give the students more opportunity to listen and read along to different types of literature. Having more choices will allow them to choose books that interest them as well. Another beloved activity is the use of magnet letters to help practice spelling words and high frequency words. Over the years, many of the magnet letters we currently own have been misplaced or lost their magnets, rendering them useless. It is frustrating and time consuming for the students to look through the bin to attempt to find the letter they need, only to find there is not one. Providing materials that the students can access each day is so important to their educational experience
If you are able to donate and help me purchase these literacy center materials for my classroom, I know my students will make progress with their literacy skills in a timely manner.
This will provide my students the opportunity to have access to the literacy centers 2 or 3 times during the week, instead of just once a week like they currently use the centers. This increase in usage will allow the students to progress in their literacy skills at a quicker pace, and continue their love of reading.
