E komo mai to our classroom where 19 happy first graders are learning how to read and take responsibility for their literacy skills. Many of these students attended limited kindergarten due to quarantines and other COVID-19 protocols that inhibited their ability to attend school regularly. Several students were still learning their letter sounds upon entering 1st grade. At this point in the school year students are developing their reading skills daily voraciously learning and making remarkable personal gains! Students are able to read most sounds, sight words and write their sounds and sight words to prepare for the next grade level. These hands on tools will help students build sight words, practice phonics and sound blends as well as practice their reading fluency independently and in small groups.
