Literacy and STEAM through Muggle Magic
My students need a class set of the book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, for our after school book club. We would also like to incorporate the audio book and picture book in our reading.
School for my students is a positive, fun place where they come every morning eager to learn and experience something new! We are a Title I school where 98% of our student population receives free and reduced lunch.
Despite the many challenges they face, my students have a real desire to learn and be successful.
Their inquisitive minds drive them to explore the world around them. They have a hunger to learn. They are problem solvers, leaders, helpers, and friends.
My students have a love for reading, but very rarely do they have the opportunity to incorporate reading with other areas of learning. For many of my students, reading has become boring and more of an obligation than enjoyment. I would like to provide them an opportunity, a club, where we not only read to strengthen our academic skills, but read for enjoyment! As we read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, students will strengthen their literacy and comprehension skills. We will complete character, setting and theme analysis, fluency practice, and listening skills. We will also incorporate STEAM (Science, Technology, Art, and Math) projects to enhance their knowledge in these areas.
