Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first year teacher at Chicago International Charter School, Bucktown Campus. I teach second grade and have a class of 26 students. Eighty-six percent of the students in our school receive free or reduced lunches.
Reading and phonics are a huge part of our curriculum in second grade. All children learn differently, and my goal is to provide my students with the appropriate materials and tools to meet their individual learning needs. I would like for my students to have the opportunity to build their skills through working hands-on with literacy “centers.” These centers would include a listening center, phonics games, phonics puzzles, flashcards, and word sorts. The centers would benefit my students by providing them with a “fun” way to improve their phonemic awareness and literacy skills.
My students would use the centers individually and in small groups. The centers will be used during reading, as well as during the students' “choice” time. They will provide students with varying ability levels the opportunity to see, hear, and touch the reading and phonics skills they are working on. The word sorts, flashcards, and listening center (where the students can listen to a story on tape while following along in the text) will help the struggling readers in my classroom build fluency and practice the sounds and sight words they need to work on. The phonics games and puzzles will provide enrichment to those students who are already fluent readers and meet grade level expectations. I hope to implement “center time” into our daily curriculum.
