Literacy and Phonics Activities for Students with Special Needs
Help me give my students fun phonics and literacy resources and activities, such as a mobile storage cart and Touch and Read Phonics Sentence Match, to help their reading skills.
My students are in a special education class for children on the autism spectrum and other disabilities. Every student is a unique individual with their own needs, abilities, interests, etc. We work on academics (reading, writing, and math) as well as social skills, fine and gross motor, sensory, language/communication, and behavioral skills. We are in a low income school with a variety of demographic backgrounds.
My students' individualized education plan (IEP) is vital to their progress, as it helps each student meet specialized goals for school and life success.
Every day we work on their IEP goals, as well as state standards. Each student works on different activities one-on-one with staff but also have opportunities for small group instruction with peers. We also strive for inclusion for special education students by having them join a general education class for specials, recess, and some academics, etc.
I am very passionate about differentiating instruction and advocating for my students. I have my masters in Autism Education and continuously look for professional development in order to be the best teacher I can be for my students. I think it is important to always keep learning and keep up with new researched methods of teaching.
My Project
This donation bundle includes phonics and literacy activities to help students with special needs learn to read. It also includes book organization to help students choose books at their appropriate reading levels, as well as highlighter tape to help these students focus in on certain phrases, words, or parts of words while reading. All of these activities and resources will help my students will special needs increase their reading skills.
These literacy and phonics activities and resources, such as Phonics Sentence Match and flip books, will help students with special needs in grades Kinder through 2nd learn to read in a fun and engaging way.
Reading can be difficult for some students, but these activities will help my struggling readers towards meeting their individual grade level goals.
My students will be able to use these activities and resources one on one with the support of myself or my assistant, or in small groups with other students at their levels. Once taught how to use the resources and activities, my students will also be able to access them independently, for increased practice.
I can’t wait to see my students improve their reading skills this school year with the help of this project!
