My students need a listening center for small literacy groups to support various academic levels during intervention groups. They also need different leveled read alongs.
I have 14 amazing students. They work very hard each and every day. By the end of the year, my goal is to have all of my students reading at least at great level and for those students needing phonics to know all letter sounds and sight words. The biggest challenge is not having a listening center.
My Students are 1st graders.
They are very motivated to learn. They work hard at everything they do. They help each other when they are able. They are at various academic levels going from emerging readers to fluent readers. During interventions, the students work in three separate groups. Their academic level determines what their activities will be. A Listening center could be used to scaffold for all academic levels.
My Project
The Listening center will be used during intervention times. Each group will have an opportunity at least 2 times a week to use this station. For the strong readers they will listen to a story and do a read and respond based on which ever skill we are currently working. For example, they may list the characters and describe them, or tell about the setting and draw a picture of what the setting looks like to them or they may sequence events that occurred in the story, such as beginning, middle and end. For my struggling readers they would use the phonics activities to increase their letter recognition and sounds, and begin reading basic words by putting the sounds together.
Donations for a listening and literacy center in the classroom will improve the classroom environment by providing a station that students can easily use on their own and help them to take leadership in the station and their own learning.
It will also help the students to become more fluent and stronger readers which will provide them with life long skills. Reading will only help students further their education and provide a good outlook for their future.
