The students of my various classrooms are a cohort of diverse, intelligent, and hardworking students from around the New York City Metropolitan area. Our school is a selective, public, college preparatory school with a focus on science, math, and engineering that provides a challenging academic experience that prepares students for careers in science, math, and engineering.
My classroom is not only a place of challenge and discovery but also a place where students come to de-stress and learn every day life skills.
Students in my general education classroom and after school Executive Function Classes are primarily from first-generation families and/or have learning disabilities. During the day my students learn about science and health. After school, they are learning how to be organized and communicative in order to develop a foundation that will allow them to be successful in their educational careers and beyond.
My Project
Literacy and being well informed is extremely important in order to be successful in life. Many of my students do not have access to reading materials as we do not have a library at our school.
With this project, I hope to bring in magazines which are easy for students to transport and will help inform them of everyday issues that society and the world are facing.
With these resources, our students would be able to use the magazines during independent reading time. In addition, with them being portable, they can borrow them and read them on their downtime or while they are moving from place to place.
This project will also help expose our students to complex vocabulary and critical issues our society is facing. Many of our students are from first generation families where they don't speak English at home which puts them behind in knowing general vocabulary from the lack of exposure. Being informed will help them have deeper conversations and be more aware of social issues to help them make more informed decisions.
