Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to come to school and excited to learn!
My second grade dual language classes consist of forty diverse learners.
Our Title I campus is made up of over six hundred students. I teach in a community of students from low-income families. Many of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Additionally, thirty-six percent of our population is identified as English Language Learners. Have you ever felt lost because you don't speak or understand the English language? My students face this challenge everyday. Despite their many hardships, my students enter the building each day with a smile on their faces. I want my students to continue to smile!
My Project
My students need games and activities that focus on sight words, fluency, and word meanings to explore during our ELA block. They will use these materials to explore through practice with sight words, vowel sounds, and decoding, all of which will help them become stronger readers! The fluency and comprehension activities will be used during reading time as we read with our bilingual partners. They will be able to use the games during our small group time, targeting a specific skill in grammar, vocabulary or usage. English language learners' struggles to learn English and academic content at the same time, should not be considered double the work, but double the learning. My students need strong speaking and literacy skills to be successful, especially in the written and spoken aspects of the English language. They will love school and feel success at an early age, all while having fun!
