Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager to learn, and willing to try but have many odds stacked against them. We are located in an urban area where my students come from a low socioeconomic background. A full 99% of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Very few of my students have access to computers at home. Roughly 2/3 of our students read below grade level. We have had technology projects fully funded in the past and it has made such a difference in student engagement in the classroom!
My Project
One of the biggest challenges in the literacy classroom is having enough high-interest, relevant reading material on hand to strengthen reading strategies in new and exciting ways; a project like this brings those kinds of materials into our classroom. Scholastic News, DynaMath, and Super Science will provide new reading material each month. Students will use Scholastic News to read and write about current events, DynaMath to apply math strategies to real life settings, and Super Science to extend their learning in Science. Also, the sets of classroom plays on American History and Myths and Fables will let students practice their fluency as they explore a new genre.
This project will make a huge difference because it will allow students access to a variety of reading genres connected to the learning we are doing in Math, Science, and Social Studies.
Students will be reinforcing their reading skills across all the content areas.
In addition, this variety of materials will allow students to build their vocabulary and build background about topics related to all content areas. This is especially important for English Language Learners as they will be learning new English vocabulary.
