Why is the sky blue? Fourth graders are often bursting with curiosity about the world around them, however, they balk at the thought of a textbook science lesson. Literature is a wonderful way to engage the reluctant historian, scientist, and mathematician in core subjects.
My students are funny, enthusiastic and energetic fourth graders.
They enjoy a challenge and look forward to tracking their academic progress and setting higher and higher goals for themselves. Although they live in an underserved community and failing school zone, students and parents are continually trying to expand their academic opportunities.
My Project
I have selected books that explore Common Core math, science, and social studies subjects such as multiplication, the symbols of America, and photosynthesis. These resources will help springboard units on a variety of core subjects. Through books students will be engaged in various math, science, and social studies subjects. These books will offer them tangible real word examples. More importantly they will expose students to these subjects outside of a textbook, making lessons more inspiring and creative. Moreover, since the books are part of the classroom library, students are free to explore these books on their own as they investigate their own academic interests and expand their reading ability.
I want the best for my students.
No matter where students live, they deserve a public education that will prepare them for college. This project will set my classroom on the path for change by providing fun and creative ways to engage with core subjects. This project will help shape future historians, scientists, and mathematicians!
