Help me give my students classic American literature to improve their reading and writing skills!
My students are beyond spectacular. Ours is a 4th grade Advanced class made up of gifted and high-achieving students. These kids work hard, and, at recess, we play hard!
They are brilliant and teach me as much as I teach them, but even gifted children need an extra boost to help them develop to their fullest potential.
DonorsChoose.org and you help bridge that gap for these diligent, deserving children, providing us the resources we need to ensure their lifelong success.
While we have a superb collection of current graphic fiction - Nate the Great, Raina Telgemeier - in our classroom library, my students also deserve and desire to dip into the American classics.
Can you imagine reaching your teenage years without ever having read Twain, Whitman, Frost, and Dickinson?
Augh! Well, we can stave off that unfortunate tendency by immersing these wonderful children not only in what is new and hip but also in what is classic in American letters.
Here's how we read: we have a class discussion on themes for the day's selection, then we read aloud, pausing for further discussion, and then respond in writing, which we then read aloud for yet more discussion and critique. There's more, though - we follow up by composing our own essays, poetry, and fiction using the writing lessons we learned from the American masters. It's a full-immersion experience here.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
