Our school is located in a small, rural town in South Carolina. Being a Title One school, ninety percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. My class is made up of twenty-four students. Not every student has the same resources to bring to school. Some students do not even come with paper and pencil in hand. Other students have any resource they want. It is very difficult to make a "level playing field" when some students don't have their basic needs like food and shelter met.
This will project will not only teach reading, but social studies as well. These books will allow my students to read and learn about social studies objectives as well as increase reading skills.
The impact of these books will be across the curriculum.
I want my kids to foster their love for reading. If I am able to reach at least one new student who didn't really like to read, then it is worth it. Having an interest in reading doesn't just go away. They will remember how much of an impact this donation made in their life for years to come. It will also impact not only my kids this year, but my kids in many years to come as well.
