I love our students! I teach at a Title 1 school where over 70% are receiving free or reduced lunch. They are amazing students who love coming to school. All of our kids need the stability of our school since most of them move around so often. My job is to make sure they are cared for while also teaching them 5th grade standards.
Our district doesn't have the finances to provide new books for our students.
All of our literature study books and reading support is purchased by myself or other teachers. Our 5th grade students love having their own novel to read. When they have newer novels to read they relate better and are more engaged.
My Project
This year our 5th graders will be reading Wonder and Punished among other lit studies. Our school does not have the funds to help purchase novels for our students. The curriculum provided is far out of date and uninteresting to the students.
Wonder and Punished are going to teach our students the standards, but they will also be able to make meaningful connections.
We are going to use Wonder in our 5th grade kindness campaign to teach them about accepting others. The story Punished is a fun read that is filled with figurative language. A big part of 5th grade curriculum is figurative language and how to use it in their writing. This is a much more fun way to learn than pencil and paper drills.
