Our students came to PGS in August of 2018. These five-year-olds come from many diverse backgrounds and cultures. A few of these students have come prepared for kindergarten, most, though, are not prepared. The majority of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and their families cannot afford to transport them to and from school. Our school provides 100% free or reduced price lunch, clothing and shoe programs, and weekend food bags.
My kindergarten classroom strives to give these students new and engaging experiences!
I know at home it is difficult for them to accomplish this, so it is our wish to provide these experiences for our children. My classroom goal is to promote positivity and respectfulness, all while cooperating in a team-like society!
My Project
For this project, I am asking for various children's books that my students will be able to access through independent reading, small groups, and whole group read alouds. Adding these highly recommended books to our classroom library will help expand their abilities, but also give the students more choices when it comes to their reading. I am also asking for chart paper for our whole group read alouds. This chart paper will allow the students to create concept maps that correlate with the new books that we are going to study.
Having new literature and paper to document their findings will highly benefit our classroom.
The students get bored with the same books, so providing them with more enriching texts that align to our state standards will help them become more interested in reading. Also, having the chart paper will help the students create maps that they can use as the basis for their writing!
