This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are amazing. They work hard and give their best every day. I love watching them get excited about learning as their confidence in their ability grows. They believe in themselves so much that if asked, "Who are the best 6th graders ever?" they will yell, "We are!"
I teach at a Title I focus school in Kansas City, Missouri, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch, and only three of the students came to school with all of the required supplies.
Of the 19 students returning to my class, 14 are at least two grade levels behind in reading and math. Last year, with the help of DonorsChoose reading and math materials, seven students made academic gains in math and/or reading of 1.5 years or more. Now, they need your help getting the supplies they need to continue making great academic gains.
My Project
The Engage New York curriculum has helped my students to master 6th grade standards by engaging with reading materials at their instructional level. We have used other curricula in our class, but my students absolutely prefer Engage New York.
While the curriculum includes all of the worksheets, activities and projects the students need, required and suggested texts are not included.
Each of the books listed is a required text that will be used daily throughout our current 9-week reading unit. My students worked hard last year and earned the top test scores in our building. Please help them continue their success.
