Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I teach in the neighborhood that I grew up in. Fifth Ward, in Houston, is one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Texas. My students face some of the most adverse conditions on a daily basis. They still strive to use education to better their situations. Many of them lack access to basic needs (food, clothing, shelter, utilities), and nearly all of them lack meaningful access to technology.

The purpose of this program is to allow for the purchase of technology to use towards improving the reading skills of my students.

As listening is the precursor to comprehension. Donations to this program will allow me to create a Listening/Recording station to provide intensive remediation for students who struggle with reading.

My Project

Many of my students are 2-3 grade levels behind in Reading. In order to remediate that deficiency, my goal is to create a listening/recording station that allows me to record lessons, as well as record students reading aloud, and give them access to tablets where they can access apps that will work on their particular deficiency.

The materials requested will allow me to create stations to group students according to their problem areas and provide specialized intervention for each student on their level.

Funding this project will allow me to measurable increase reading comprehension for students who are 2-3 years behind academically.
