Imagine being a struggling reader. There are books everywhere with your favorite TV and movie characters, but many of them are too hard for you to read. You might pick them up to read them but become frustrated or overwhelmed by the sheer amount of text. Listening to these books could be the answer!
I work as a Title 1 teacher in a small, low income school.
My students are struggling readers who do not qualify for special services but are not up to grade level and need an extra boost in their academics. I work with students from 1st to 8th grade and attempt to help these students with any academic boosts I can give them. The majority of my students come from low income families where the parents work very hard and often cannot help their child get the boost they need at home.
My Project
To engage my students in reading, I often use a wide variety of text. We read everything in my classroom from their typical basal reading books to the newspaper to magazines. I have access to a variety of books that have CDs accompanying them, but my classroom does not have a way to play the read aloud books. There are also many audiobooks that we could have access to if we had the resources available to each student.
A fellow teacher of mine has also developed a way for students to read more fluently using the iPods. The students read a passage into the microphone attached to the iPod. Then the students listen to themselves reading and assess what they could do better. Then they read the story again, attempting to work on those improvements that they wanted to make. It's a fabulous way for students to develop fluency as they read!
Struggling to read is one of the hardest challenges to overcome in school.
If you are a student that is lower than your peers, it becomes an even more daunting and incredible task. My students need your help to develop those reading abilities by being able to listen to stories being told in a variety of ways and by listening to their own reading and improving on their abilities. Donating to this project will impact these students' lives in insurmountable ways.
