My Students
The students at our school are happy, eager to learn and exemplify kindness despite the high poverty rate that has limited their life experiences. With over 70% receiving free lunch, the majority of our students are Spanish speaking, living in a neighborhood that supports their home language. A diversity of cultures, folklore, music, and experiences make up our neighborhood and the students who come from El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and other countries from South America. It isn't uncommon to have students arrive who have never been in a learning environment, let alone experience English. No matter what their predominate language might be, our students love learning and books! They embrace new knowledge, new experiences, and are entranced by colorful photographs in books that help build their visual knowledge along with heartfelt stories of love, kindness, and sharing.
My Project
The majority of our students are English Language Learners so audiobooks with supported text, such as Esperanza Rising, will be embraced with joy and expectations. Small groups of students will join me in listening to each chapter, visualizing the events through art, and then discussing their interpretations before moving on to the next chapter. Their joy will be in the opportunities to learn and grow in their language acquisition while becoming more fluid in their understanding of vocabulary and sentence structure. More importantly, students will have the opportunity to enjoy timeless classics that will put them on par with their peers.
