Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade at Hargrove Elementary in a very rural area of North Carolina. Approximately 70% of our population receives free or reduced lunch. Receiving parental support is a task in itself to say the least. In fact, I would say that is my biggest challenge as a teacher at this school. We have a very high population of Hispanics with many of them speaking little or no English. For example, currently, I have one student who speaks absolutely no English and two with very limited English skills. I am one person and I struggle constantly with feelings that I am not doing my best when I think deep down that I know I am.
Getting my non-English speaking students involved is something at which I constantly work. Let's face it, I probably wouldn't listen either if I couldn't understand a word that was being said.
Research has proven that hearing another language is one of the most effective ways of eventually communicating it. Currently I have no listening center. I truely feel that if I could get some of the books that have both the English and Spanish versions on tape, I could eventually see the light at the end of the tunnel. I would like to have the students first listen to the book or selection in their own language, then listen to it in English. I think hearing another language while looking at the words is key, especially when having heard the selection in your native language as well.
This project would require a CD/cassette listening center. Approximately four students would be participating at the time. Of course, it would also require several age appropriate books for grade 1 in both Spanish and English versions.
I think reading is about letting your imagination run wild and I feel like my non-English speaking students aren't getting this wonderful opportunity because of a language barrier. I feel that this is the least I can do to meet them half way.
