My students need to build a strong literacy foundation and I am hoping to help provide this with a Best Buy Listening Center. Students will be able to listen to and read along with rich, good quality books.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are an urban school and serve both general education and special education students. Our school serves children in Pre-Kindergarten through Second grade. Every child in our school receive free breakfast and lunch.
A day in our Kindergarten classroom consists of the children learning and playing together.
The children spend part of their day on teams of 3 -4 children working in small groups. These groups are fluid as children move in and out of them allowing us to meet the needs of our diverse learners. During this "job" time, the students in my class work with students from another Kindergarten class and have even more opportunities to access our curriculum. We have jobs that are very academic based and jobs that are play based. Jobs have given us the opportunity to focus on small groups of children, meeting specific needs while everyone is busy learning. Each child meets with the teacher every day for intense intervention and/or enrichment. Many of the students we serve come to us lacking rich, early learning experiences which makes the work we do even more important.
My Project
My students need to build a strong literacy foundation and I am hoping to help provide this with a Best Buy Listening Center. Students will be able to listen to and read along with rich, good quality books. Children will be able to sit with a small group of friends while listening to language-rich, good quality literature. They will be able to follow along, tracking the print on each page. Many of the children in my class come to me lacking vocabulary skills and learning through literature is one of the most effective ways to build these skills.
This listening center will help my little ones develop vital skills to become readers.
It will provide them with the independence of choosing books they are interested in and listening to their favorites over and over. When children learn to read , the possibilities really are endless.
