I am a 5th grade teacher who enjoys using the Literature Circle approach as a part of reading instruction. Literature Circles are student book clubs in which the students select the books they want to read and later discuss with other classmates. My students become so excited to read books of their own choosing and to meet in small groups to talk over what they are reading. However, each year I notice that some students would like to participate in Literature Circles using books that are a bit above their reading level. I don't like to discourage them from selecting those books, but I also want to make sure they will be successful in their group. If I had individual cassette players or CD players in my classroom, those students could participate by reading along with a book on tape or CD.
Another reason I would like to have audio books available is that listening to literature builds fluency in readers. When students hear an expert reader bring a book to life, they learn how to read with fluency and expression. I would allow all students in the literature group to take a turn listening to the book so everyone can develop these reading skills. Students would be expected to follow along in their books, tracking the text, as they listen to the audio version of the book.
I would like to purchase several individual cassette players and CD players. In addition, I would like to make sure that these audio materials could be used with either batteries or an adaptor cord. My students have their favorite reading spots in the classroom, and I would like them to be able to take their players with them to their chosen locations. I feel they would be less likely to view the tapes as something for remedial students if the items look like "regular" CD or cassette players and can be used in any location.
The materials I am requesting are two individual cassette players, two CD players, adaptor cords, extra headphones, extra batteries, and audio books for some of the book sets I have in my classroom.
