My Students

My first grade students speak six different languages: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Tagalog, and Dari. One thing they all have in common, though - no matter what their primary language - is a love of listening to stories.

Hearing stories read aloud brings the worlds of literature to life for my students.

They are excited to be able to follow along in their own books as they listen to stories. This, in turn, motivates them to learn how to read themselves.

My Project

Research has shown that listening to stories read aloud helps students develop their comprehension skills and can increase their vocabulary. Audiobooks provide children with models of correctly phrased, fluent reading. These benefits translate to increased reading proficiency for the students.

By providing audio CDs as well as print copies of popular children's books, this project will allow my students to reap the rewards of listening to engaging stories while they read along.

Classics such as "Aladdin" and "Curious George Feeds the Animals" - as well as more modern titles like "Fancy Nancy and the Delectable Cupcakes" - will motivate even the most reluctant readers.
