Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our schools student population is made up of 90% of English language learners. We have a large population of students assigned to our school and limited amount of space and teachers. The majority of my students cannot go to Pre-K, and also it causes teachers to have a large amount of students.
The majority of the students come from low-income homes with non-English speaking parents, some with very limited education.
They need exposure to hands-on activities, books, technology and meaningful learning experiences.
My Project
We have a listening center but it has been hard to find Spanish audiobooks to listen to. At this young age listening to these audio stories in Spanish will help my students not only enjoy reading but help with their comprehension skills.
The listening center is a very important part of our daily centers because the students practice listening to a story, drawing the characters, setting, their favorite part or the sequence of the story.
In addition, the students gain book awareness by finding and writing the title on their paper, practicing how to hold a book, turn the pages and how to read from left to right.
