I am a first grade teacher in Texas. I serve at a Title 1 school, which means 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Despite the difficult challenges these young children face outside of school, they are eager to learn new information and soak up life in our classroom each day. As their teacher, it is my job to ensure that my students receive the best education possible by providing a positive and inviting classroom environment that allows students a risk-free yet challenging atmosphere. These children desire something they can take ownership of, something they are in control of, something that they can take pride in- and I believe my project will help provide this to my sweet and spirited students.
My Project
This year, my school has provided my students and me with 12 Chromebooks to allow for innovative instruction and practice during work stations and intervention.
However, with the demographics of my students along with their age, our supply of effective headphones is grim.
A majority of my students did not come to school with the requested supply list, and those that did bring headphones brought ear buds. Ear buds are great, but I have come to realize that 1st grade students struggle with getting them to fit and stay in their ears. They also become much more dirty and much harder to clean than the on-ear ones. My students use headphones multiple times a day during both reading and math stations, A.R. reading tests, and during intervention to complete work tasks. Without effective earphones, our room is filled with computer tones and game sounds, which causes the classroom climate to become very distracting for my learners. With a class set of on-ear headphones, my students at computers would be able to effectively listen and complete assessments and tasks, and those not at computers would be able to concentrate free from the computer sounds and game tones. This project will greatly improve the working environment in my classroom.
