21st century literacy and technology are about to collide! When was the last time you heard your own voice? Did you recognize yourself? The third, fourth, and fifth grade students in my intervention groups have trouble hearing their own voices! Often times, students in these intermediate grades lose motivation to work on remedial skills in fluency. Fluency and comprehension work hand in hand though so we work with both skills to improve their reading abilities, self image, and desire to become readers! Digital voice recorders would help to motivate students and bring a new depth of understanding of their own needs. This technology, digital voice recorders, would allow my students to record and store their fluency attempts and allow them to hear and analyze their rate, phrasing, and expression. Each student would have a digital portfolio to share their growth over time. Parents would be able to hear the growth as well. I envision being able to email a file to a parent, or play the recording over the phone, to share in the student's success the same day. As a reading specialist I often struggle to overcome motivation and self image before I can breakthrough to reading skills. You would be providing these students with 21st century technology that will also allow them skill practice at the same time!
