What can I do for those children with poor reading skills yet have learned to be good listeners? I have many students with learning disabilities who would greatly benefit from listening centers. I live in a very low income area and there seems to be more and more FEMA trailers every day. My residential students as well as my "Katrina" students have so many needs. I am requesting materials to set up a learning center to better instruct these students. An at risk child can quite often learn new words more rapidly if he can hear and see the words. Multi sensory learning...often means more learning. We have 74 special needs students at our school. We have grades 3-5.
My students need learning centers so that they may be able to work in small groups and have a variety of media to assist them in language arts and in math. Taped stories help students remember and enable them to use what they have learned. All subject matter can be read and taped for these learners. (This gives assistance in all academic areas.)
In our small town we have had a number of businesses to close and we have lost much of our local income. Our schools and teachers have been given more students per classroom than previously allowed. We sure can use your help. Some of the items I have requested may seem small and unimportant, but they are certainly needed in my area. I would appreciate any assistance that you can give us at this time.
