This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a very energetic group of 35 students. The majority of my 3rd graders have social emotional, behavior and learning disabilities. They are a very challenging group that require so much attention, love, patience and understanding. This is by far my most challenging group in my 14 years of teaching.
98% of my students get free or reduced lunch.
They come from a very impoverished area of the westside of Chicago. Many are plagued by gun violence, drugs, crime, incarceration of a loved one, alcohol abuse, physical abuse, and a multitude of other experiences that no 8 or 9 year old should be faced with.
My Project
My students work independently on the computer daily; however, headphones in our classroom do not work and/or have disappeared. This makes it difficult for the students who need to concentrate on their work, whether they are on the computer or working in a small group with the teacher.
Headphones are a necessity because my students struggle with reading and need the computer to read to them.
By providing my class with new, quality set of headphones, my students will be able to maximize their use of computer and independent work time. It will also help reduce the anxiety my students may begin to feel when their headphones are not working.
