My Students
I am a 2016 graduate, fresh out of college! I am a second year first grade teacher to a wonderful class of 16 first grade students who love to learn! This is a class full of children who are determined to work hard and beat the odds that are set against them. They are from a high poverty area. Their home life is not ideal, but they make the best of it. This school is a Title 1 school in an urban area.
Being a second year teacher in a low income area, I want to make the best of what I can provide for my students and make them excited to learn and feel at home without any stress.
This school has allowed me to feel like I am at home despite being 500 miles away from my family. This school is full of cultures and languages and bring this to light in any way, any school day. They make sure everyone is family. I incorporate literacy instruction into my classroom daily no matter what time of the day it is! Having reading and class materials that incorporate culture would allow my students to share about themselves and learn about others!
My Project
Reading is so important for children at this age. I make sure to read books aloud to my students, but having a listening station to incorporate during our Guided Reading rotations and throughout the day would be a great addition to our classroom.
They would have the chance to have someone else read a book to them which a lot of them they are not fortunate enough to have when they come home from school each day.
They are then given the opportunity to use their comprehension skills and answer questions about the books they read and put their skills to work!
