Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth year NYC public school reading recovery teacher. I work with approximately 16 children in a low income neighborhood in the South Bronx. Ninety six percent of the children in my school receive free lunch. In reading recovery, understanding why a child makes certain reading mistakes are critical for rapid acceleration to occur. The mistakes may trace back to a miscommunication between teacher and student, a book introduction without language set-up or not attending to medial sounds. I would like to obtain a reading lab tape recorder to record reading sessions. A tape recorder allows much more of a lesson to be captured than just notes or a running record does. It is often helpful for both the teacher and the child to hear what transpired during strategy work. Children can rethink their response and approach problem solving differently. In addition, the teacher can reflect on how to more accurately zone in on each child's strength and how to build their weak points.
