This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from a high poverty area and overcome adversity every day. All of my students struggle in school and are in need of multi-modal ways to learn. At my school, we know students go through a lot every day so we try our best to make learning engaging, fun, and meaningful.
My students are a group of leaders who love to take charge of their learning.
With that being said, they love activities that are different than the typical worksheet. Knowing they still have a lot to learn, they jump into engaging activities with enthusiasm and determination.
My students grow further when they are allowed to express their creativity, use hands on materials, and have access to their accommodations and supplementary aids. Poster projects, interactive notebooks, cutting, pasting, and centers are weekly activities in my classroom.
My Project
By having a fully functioning listening center in our classroom, students will be exposed to examples of fluent readers weekly. This allows students to compare and work on their own fluency.
Audio books not only help fluency, but help students to better their reading comprehension as well.
All of my students are below grade level in reading and usually get stuck on the words in the story. This hinders their comprehension. Taking away the stress of reading the book will allow students to listen carefully to the content and practice the essential skills they need to move to the next grade level.
These audio books, CD players, and headphones will be a part of our daily small group routines. Students will use this center to read independently and practice the skills they learned throughout the previous week. Practice makes perfect! This will allow them extra exposure to essential skills and literature and lead them onto the road of mastery!
