I am a first year teacher to 22 awesome students in 2nd grade. Many of these students come from a poverty stricken home have difficulty comprehending what they are reading on a daily basis.
Walking into a classroom for the first time and being faced with students of all different abilities can be very challenging. I have accepted the challenge, and I am working to improve each students comprehension skills one day at a time. I am doing this by spending 1 hour each morning in whole group activities followed by an hour of literacy centers. The centers allow me to pull students in small groups according to abilities while the others work independently to complete literacy activities. I have several activities for the students to complete daily, but adding a listening center to my classroom will enhance the students learning abilities to another level.
Getting students to comprehend what is in a story can be difficult for many. With this listening centers the students will have the opportunity to listen to a story while following along in the text. It will also help them to understand more clearly what is going on page after page. The listening center not only helps them to comprehend, but helps the students to learn high frequency words which occur often in stories and every day life. I am excited to know my students will be able to comprehend reading materials a little easier by using the listening center.
By adding the listening center to my classroom, I am certain that my students will excel in the area of literacy. I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to read and consider my proposal to help my first year students become reading stars!
