Do you remember what it was like to go home and sit down and read your nightly story with your parents? Or maybe how excited you were to bring home a library book for your parents to read to you?
I have a class of 23 wonderful first grade students.
Each is very special in their own way. Their levels vary among each and everyone of them. Our first grade is at a small school in Oklahoma. This school cares very deeply about our children's education. In our classroom, we try to find several ways to reach each student. Whether it is trying different activities or lessons to reach each learner, we do our best! One way that I found helps my students with their reading is my listening center. I found that each student enjoys the books and finds reading a little more enjoyable. This enables them to love reading!! That is my goal in first grade. I want them to be able to listen to a story and enjoy it. There is nothing more enjoyable than seeing a student take off in their reading. And I honestly think my listening center is a great part of why my kids are starting to love to read!
My Project
These resources that I am wanting for my room will allow these kids to listen literature. There are so many students in my class that does not get that special time at home where parents read to them. With this, students will be able to read a long with the story, as well as hear the story. They will learn to become more fluent readers by listening to the different types of stories.
Whether we receive new or old books with tapes, our class would benefit tremendously.
I know that these listening materials will enable my students to become better readers. It will not only help them now, but will prepare them to be better readers for the future! The more they listen to stories, the better they will become at being more fluent and showing expression. First grade is such an important year. We are learning to read, but most importantly, we are learning to be better at it!
