My students need a new listening library to help them increase their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our books with accompanying CDs were lost in Harvey's waters.
My students are not victims; they are achievers. So often in the media we hear about Hurricane Harvey victims. Harvey flooded many of my students' homes, neighborhoods, and churches, and ALL of our schools and community. But my students do not consider themselves victims. They build, grow, over-come, thrive, learn, and achieve.
Despite many hardships, my students show up for school each morning excited to be here, ready to learn, and eager to share new stories of triumphs.
We celebrate each small victory together as homes and lives are rebuilt and amenities restored. We have been learners on four campuses this year as we move from place to place in search of a safe, dry environment. It is predicted to take two years for us to hold classes again in our Harvey-flooded school, but my students welcome the challenge!
My Project
The students that I work with are struggling readers; many of them are dyslexic or have orthographic processing deficits. A listening library will help my students increase their reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.
The listening library has always been my students' favorite classroom center.
Unfortunately, we lost all our books with accompanying CDs in Hurricane Harvey floodwaters. My students love to choose their own book, lay on the floor with a giant pillow, and follow along as the book is read to them. Without the struggle of decoding unfamiliar words, students can enjoy the story and illustrations all the while learning new words and skills.
