Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning to love stories is all part of growing up. I've discovered that my students are much more attentive to stories read aloud when they can follow along in a book and do not have the added pressure of being asked questions during the story or with having to make contact with the reader.
My incredible class is made up of students who are deaf, deaf/blind, autistic, orthopedically impaired, cognitively impaired and other health impaired.
Yes, we are special education, but we are special in so many ways. Most of my students are non-verbal. We communicate using gestures, American Sign Language, PECS, icons, object/symbols, assistive communication devices as well as speech. I use whatever it takes. They enjoy coming to school so much. Each one of them thrives on routine and without knowing how to tell time they can practically run the classroom if I'm not there using their picture/symbol schedules. Their favorite time of day is "Morning Circle Time" when they get to "sign in," greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and basically "show off" for each other.
My Project
Most children like to hear stories over and over again. For a student with special needs, it can be difficult to sit through a Read-A-Loud with other students. Our listening center is FANTASTIC. However, last year when I ordered Books on CD, I failed to understand the difference between CD/spoken word and Mixed Media. As a result, several of our stories came in CD format only, with no book. My students have enjoyed our listening library ever so much. I'd like to complete it by providing the 15 books for the remaining audio CDs.
Most people take for granted that children will sit and listen quietly as the teacher reads a book.
For my students, this can sometimes be very difficult. I want to provide them with every opportunity for exposure to literature.
